Diets for Stomach Problems

Many medical conditions can be prevented or minimised by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and basic dietary changes. If you are suffering of gastritis, gastroenteritis, I.B.S, or jaundice, we have put at your disposal some dietary indications that will help you to control the symptoms.

Diet for Gastritis

  • Stop grazing. Don’t eat small meals every few hours, even if you are trying to lose weight. Eating frequently can increase the amount of acid that your stomach produces, further irritating that lining.
  • Eat your fruits and veggies. Include a lot of fresh, leafy vegetables in your diet, as well as fresh fruits. Avoid vegetables that might give you gas, such as broccoli or cabbage.
  • Increase your fiber intake. High-fiber foods help keep your digestive tract working properly.
  • Cut down on the dairy. Dairy can also contribute to too much acid in your stomach. Keep your dairy servings to three per day or fewer using low-fat or non-fat foods.
  • No more spicy cuisine. When thinking about your diet, you may have to think “bland.” Avoid pepper, chilies and spicy foods.
  • Get rid of those vices. You should cut back or eliminate alcoholic beverages and stop smoking. This will contribute to your overall health, which means it may help control gastritis.
  • Caffeine is also a no-no. Don’t forget that caffeine isn’t just in coffee. Caffeine is an ingredient in cola drinks, teas and chocolate.
  • Finding the right diet for you may take a little experimentation. After all, everyone’s body handles food differently. However, even if you adore Thai foods, the spices involved probably should be avoided, so don’t “push” your experimentation.
  • Finally, even though exercise isn’t the same as diet, exercise should still be a part of your gastritis treatment. Not only does regular exercise help you feel better and help control your weight, but regular exercise will also help reduce stress. Since stress can be a contributor to gastritis, exercising is a good thing.

Diet for Gastro-enteritis

Electrolytes, like sodium and potassium , are minerals your body needs to work properly. Vomiting and diarrhea can take too many electrolytes out of your body. Choose foods that will help you to rehydrate, regulate the balance of electrolytes in your body, and maintain nutrition.

Recommended Foods

For young infants—Breast milk or normal infant formula

For older children or adults—Normal food is usually best. This could include:

  • Bananas
  • Brown rice
  • Chicken or other lean meats
  • Potatoes
  • Applesauce (unsweetened and in moderation)
  • Vegetables
  • Oral rehydration solutions

Foods to Avoid (Adults)

  • Caffeine
  • Fatty foods
  • Spicy foods or highly seasoned foods
  • Sugary foods (especially soft drinks or fruit juices)

Some adults and older children find milk products difficult to tolerate during or immediately after an episode of gastroenteritis.

Foods to Avoid (Infants and Children)

  • Caffeine
  • Fatty foods
  • Spicy foods or highly seasoned foods
  • Sugary foods
  • Carbonated beverages
  • Juices and juice drinks (juices are high in sugar. They should generally be avoided or consumed in moderation if you or your child has gastroenteritis.)
  • Gelatin
  • Chicken broth
  • Sports drinks

You should also avoid alcohol and nicotine.

Following a diet to reduce constipation

Add fiber to your diet. Fiber will absorb water and add bulk to the large intestine, making bowel movements easier and more frequent than you usually experience. Eat high-fiber foods such as fresh fruits (raspberries, pears, apples), fresh vegetables (peas, sprouts), wheat bran, whole-grain breads and cereals, and beans. Increase the amount of fiber in your diet slowly to avoid excess gas.

Drink plenty of water. Also be sure to drink plenty of fluids, enough so that your urine is light yellow or clear like water. Fiber absorbs water, so drinking enough water will help keep stools soft.

Get regular exercise. Regular, gentle exercise such as walking, cycling, or swimming helps maintain bowel regularity.

Avoid the following diet to reduce diarrhoea

  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine, which is found in coffee, tea, cola drinks, and chocolate
  • Nicotine, from smoking or chewing tobacco
  • Gas-producing foods, such as beans, broccoli, cabbage, and apples
  • Dairy products that contain lactose (milk sugar), such as ice cream, milk, cheese and sour cream
  • Foods and drinks high in sugar, especially fruit juice, soda, candy, and other packaged sweets (such as cookies)
  • Foods high in fat, including bacon, sausage, butter, oils, and anything deep-fried
  • Sorbitol and xylitol, artificial sweeteners found in some sugarless candies and chewing gum

Diet for Jaundice

  • Jaundice patients should avoid salt, spicy food, oil, non-vegetarian food, fried items and pickle.
  • Include fruits such as pears, lime, grapes and apples, mango and also sugarcane juice in your diet. Avoid banana since it can disturb liver activity. Drink plenty of fruit juice and eat fresh fruit salads to get benefits.
  • Exclude potatoes and tomatoes from your diet. Eat simple boiled vegetables. Add a little bit of pepper and salt to add taste.
  • Curd rice is one of the best foods for jaundice condition. Rice cakes are good too. Avoid all kinds of flour except rice flour. Wheat items should also be avoided.
  • Your diet should be low in protein and rich in carbohydrates. Try to consume only juice and water for a week to eliminate toxins from the blood. This is essential to replace electrolytes lost during vomiting caused by jaundice. Once you overcome vomiting and nausea, you can gradually start taking solid food.
  • Avoid foods containing animal proteins or fat. Butter and cream which are rich in fat should therefore be avoided. Vegetable proteins like soy are beneficial. Also, proteins from vegetables are essential to maintain health.
  • Instead of three regular big meals each day, eat five smaller meals to prevent vomiting and provide rest to your digestive organs.
  • Probiotics or good bacteria found in yogurt can help to speed up the recovery process in jaundice patients.
  • Alcohol should be completely removed from your diet for jaundice. This is essential especially if you suffer from liver damage.
